IPC Mouldings, based in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, has become only the fifth business in the UK to achieve the SC21 Gold Award in the Aerospace Supply Chain.

The manufacturer which, this month is also celebrating 25 successful years as a supply chain partner in aircraft interiors, offers a range of services including mould tool design and manufacture, CNC machining, injection moulding using high performance engineering polymers and value add assemblies to aerospace, medical and other industries.

Managing Director of IPC Mouldings, Joanne Liddle, spoke of her delight at receiving the Gold Award. Joanne said, “We are thrilled to receive the SC21 Gold Award. This is an amazing achievement from an extraordinary team in IPC and reinforces our dedication to quality and delivery, ensuring that the products and services we provide to customers are of the highest standard.

“We have exceeded expectations going from an SC21 Bronze in 2015 to a Gold Award in 2019. To reach this pinnacle of excellence within the space of four years is an incredible accomplishment. Our team has worked effortlessly to create a culture of continuous improvement in line with our values and future vision for the company. All processes and standards are met, and continue to meet the required Gold framework.”

SC21 is a continuous improvement programme for improving operational effectiveness and achieving supply chain excellence within the Aerospace and Defence Industry. The programme is the primary route on the improvement ladder and some of the outcomes for participating companies include the achievement of 99% delivery and 99.9% quality performance, the reduction of supply chain risk and implementation of leaner production methods.

IPC Mouldings delivers 2.5million parts annually to the aerospace sector with a quality performance of 99.97% and 99.7% on time delivery. In 2018 there were 3.6 billion global air passengers and IPC Mouldings parts travelled with over 900 million of them.

For 12 years, Invest Northern Ireland (Invest NI) has been a regional partner of SC21 and remains committed to the programme. Invest NI continues to support local companies on their journey thus ensuring the Northern Ireland Aerospace industry stays ahead in an increasingly global competitive environment. My Journey with IPC Mouldings: Meryvn Nelson

A founding member and integral part of the team here at IPC Mouldings is Business Development Manager, Mervyn Nelson; a man with experience in the aircraft seating industry spanning 40 years, right back to the first modular seats whilst working as an engineer in Aircraft Furnishing in the 1970s.

Mervyn has expertise in many areas, specialising in the technical knowledge of the product – its design, manufacturability, assembly and durability.

Speaking about his highlights in IPC, Mervyn said, “As with every new manufacturing startup, we had our challenging times back in 1994. With an initial team of 6 engineers, there was a broad customer base which included many indigenous Northern Ireland companies such as Getty Connections, Moy Park, Schrader and of course Aircraft Furnishing, that had just been acquired by B/E Aerospace (Now Collins Aerospace).

“The big breaks came for us with Skylux and Ambience programmes back then, followed by Spectrum, which was the industry game changer and most successful single aisle seat of its time. Alongside these programmes, we were heavily involved in development work with companies like Schrader on their sensor enclosures and even with Pepsi, on emerging trends in plastic bottle design.

“In recent years, a huge challenge and personal achievement was working alongside the IPC engineering team and collaborative partners Bradfor and Magnesium Electron to make a tangerine design come to life for AIX in 2017. We engineered and built a concept seat in 8 weeks to showcase our capability and what can be achieved when supply chains work together to deliver value add to the customer. I am very proud of the end result, which still sits prominently in our conference room as a reminder of how good we can be.

“It has always been the Northern Ireland way to produce excellence, keep our head down and not shout out about our successes. I see this culture changing. As a region we continue to outperform in aerospace and as a business we punch well above our weight, competing and winning new business on a global platform. The shared pride in what we do is evident and our colleagues in IPC play a crucial role in ensuring IPC’s success both now, and for the next 25 years.”

How long have you been working for IPC Mouldings?

I have been working for IPC since I was 17 years old and have been here for over 25 years.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Every day is different at IPC. I love what I do and it’s a great feeling when I travel and get to see our end products on an aeroplane.

What is your greatest achievement with IPC Mouldings?

I have been involved in several new tooling programs and it’s always great to see something evolve into a finished product.

I also have quite a major role in ensuring we get our customers’ parts delivered on time. This can sometimes be a challenge in such a busy industry with changing requirements but it’s so rewarding at the end of each day when we know we have the job done.

What are your hobbies outside of IPC Mouldings?

I am a big football fan and a fan of Manchester United. I also play a bit of football myself, but just to keep fit.

I love music; especially the Manchester music scene and the Stone Roses.

Tell us one interesting fact about yourself:

I like to collect vinyl records and I’m trying really hard to convince both my sons to listen to them!

IPC Mouldings Join Collins Aerospace at British Supplier Delegation in the U.S

Carrickfergus manufacturing company, IPC Mouldings, is amongst a host of UK aerospace suppliers that joined Collins Aerospace at a supplier delegation conference near the company’s office in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The conference, hosting 24 U.K. aerospace suppliers including several small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), was organised by Collins and the U.K.’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; Department for International Trade and Aerospace Technology Institute. The one-day event connected the suppliers with Collins operations and supply chain executives to explore potential opportunities for future collaboration.

Speaking about the conference, Joanne Liddle, managing director of IPC said, “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to connect with additional aerospace suppliers of Collins operations here in Charlotte. IPC is proud to collaborate with a number of companies in Northern Ireland and we welcome the opportunity to discuss the rich and excellent supply chain that we have. I’d like to thank Collins Aerospace and DIT for enabling IPC to attend this worthwhile event.”

Paolo Dal Cin, vice president of Operations & Quality for Collins said, “With more than 5,000 employees across nearly 30 locations, Collins Aerospace has a significant footprint in the U.K. and we welcome the chance to discuss additional avenues for cooperation. We had a productive day of networking meetings and we look forward to continuing the conversation going forward.” Baroness Rona Fairhead, U.K. Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion said, “As a global leader in aerospace, the U.K.’s offer to the world in this sector is clear and I am delighted that the Department for International Trade has supported Collins Aerospace to host 24 U.K. aerospace suppliers in such an important market.”

IPC Mouldings is also attending the world’s leading event for aircraft interior professionals, airlines and their supply chain for cabin interiors, AIX 2019, which takes place in Hamburg from 2ndto 4thApril. How many years have you been with the company?

I have been with IPC Mouldings over 10 years now, directing a programme of change in line with the strategy for growth to ensure continued success.

How many years have you exhibited at AIX Hamburg?

This is my fourth time attending and 3^rdtime exhibiting at AIX.

What do you feel are the benefits of attending the expo?

It is a ‘must attend’ event for anyone in the aircraft interiors sector and I am looking forward to seeing new trends, innovations and technologies in such an exciting and fast moving market.

What do you hope to achieve from AIX this year?

I hope to meet with our customers, building on existing relationships and developing new ones within the aircraft interiors sector.

As a business we have come a long way and I am proud to see how the IPC team have evolved and grown over the years. Our success is built on our passion for quality products delivered on time and we have a shared pride in everything we do.

How long have you been working at IPC Mouldings?

I started with IPC Months, just over three months ago so I’m fairly new in the company.

How many years have you attended AIX Expo?

This will be my first time attending AIX Expo so I’m really looking forward to seeing the many exhibitors and other companies that will be there!

What do you feel are the benefits of exhibiting?

I feel that exhibiting at AIX Expo gives us a good market presence. It also gives us the opportunity to interact with existing and new suppliers and customers.

Who are you looking forward to engaging with at AIX?

I’m looking forward to engaging with customers, suppliers and professional bodies at the Expo!

Tell us something interesting about your time at IPC Mouldings?

As a new company member my experience with the company has been limited. I am however enthused by the people’s determination to delight the customer in the supply of high quality products on time.

Northern Ireland Supply Chain Excellence to the Forefront

In 2018, three Northern Ireland companies delivered 3.7 million parts and assemblies to the aircraft interiors industry with 99% on time delivery and quality

WITH Northern Ireland companies contributing £900m to the aerospace sector’s annual revenue, it’s no wonder that there are 11 manufacturing companies heading to the world’s leading event AIX 2019, for airlines and their supply chain for cabin interiors in Hamburg next month

Three of those companies are showcasing how collaboration and performance are key to customer partnership. The companies have also been chosen as part of a Department for International Trade mission to Collins Aerospace (formerly Rockwell Collins) to their Charlotte, North Carolina facility in two weeks’ time, the week before the Expo.

Between them in 2018, Rostrevor based seat cover manufacturer Bradfor Ltd, rapid response CNC machining and composite finishing company Exact Group, based in Newry and Carrickfergus plastic injection moulding company, IPC Mouldings, manufactured and delivered 3.7 million parts and assemblies. All AS9100 accredited and successful participants in the SC21 aerospace programme, each company has set the bar in the aircraft interiors market, where innovation and excellence is the norm and can boast a combined history of 54 years’ experience.

However, it is their supply chain excellence that is really on show where quality, on time delivery and best practice is of the utmost importance. All three report shorter lead times than the industry average, offering an agile and competitive solution to the end customer. AIX 2019 will allow Bradfor Ltd, Exact Group and IPC Mouldings to continue building relationships, uncover new innovations and technologies, get inspired by leading experts and create opportunities, allowing them to be ahead of the curve and at the top of their business.

Patricia Clements, managing director of Bradfor Ltd, who has 30 years of experience in this industry said: “The aircraft interiors’ sector continues to evolve and change. With this comes the need to embrace new technologies to ensure that your product is the best there is. Last year, Bradfor Ltd was responsible for manufacturing nearly a third of a million products of which 55,000 were seat covers for new aeroplanes and our products were delivered to at least 10 countries worldwide.”

Stephen Cromie, managing director of Exact Group, who specialises in rapid response said: “AIX 2019 is a great opportunity to engage with new and existing customers. It allows the Exact Group to showcase their precision engineering and composite finishing techniques and its rapid response, which we excel in; from enquiry to customer receipt.

“This we’ve achieved within as little as six hours with the delivery of products to the United States in as little as 38 hours. This is no small task as it includes programming, cutting the raw material, machining the parts, carrying out FAI, and then dispatch. Our composite finishing division cosmetically finish components to achieve the highest quality finishes within the industry and again these can be delivered in a rapid response time line.”

IPC Mouldings Signs Up to Women in Aviation and Aerospace Charter

THE women of Northern Ireland’s aerospace sector took a significant step towards gender balance within the industry at Thursday’s ADS Group New Year Conference, by signing the Women in Aviation and Aerospace Charter.

The Charter, which was launched in July 2018, makes a commitment to work together to build a more balanced and fair industry for women across the aviation and aerospace sector. It also focuses on driving diversity and inclusion within the sector and providing fair opportunities for women to succeed at the highest levels.

Joanne Liddle, Managing Director of leading aerospace manufacturing company, IPC Mouldings, was one of the women in attendance who signed the Charter. Joanne said, “The Women in Aviation and Aerospace Charter is a fantastic initiative for demonstrating the strength and depth of women within the aerospace industry. Whilst at times we may not like to admit it, women are underrepresented in the industry, however the Charter gives us the confidence going forward that our voices will be heard. I’m delighted to join the 80 signatories that have now signed the Charter and look forward to seeing it going from strength to strength.”

The conference, which took place at Titanic Belfast, was hosted by ADS NI and supported by Invest Northern Ireland.
